Delegation and employee motivation are the most common problems that managers of all levels seek professional services for from coaching. The problem may be due to lack of confidence and desire to control, but if lack of confidence s a common occurrence among staff, the desire for control is a personality problem and if tasks are distributed with exact requirements for implementation without any liberty for discussions, this is unhealthy. Most managers believe that only they can do the job. My question to them is how much more effective a person could be if they delegate rights. Then the lightbulb in their head goes off and they realise they will have a lot more resources to do much more if they engage their colleagues in the day-to-day tasks. Otherwise they are ineffective. Through coaching the client should find out on their own the right answer on how to cope. In coaching we never express personal opinions nor do we give advice and turnkey solutions.
Recently, the owners of a restaurant chain, innovative and open-minded about various new solutions, turned to Lead UP with a similar problem. Managers were unable to motivate staff and delegate tasks, while at the same time taking on more works themselves, which damages the business. Those were young people with limited leadership experience. We worked with them so that they recognise their role as managers, for their confidence, self-esteem and behaviour towards colleagues. Various questions and exercises provoked them to generate their own solutions; to examine the situation from different angles, to explore possibilities for solutions and development of the issue and the subsequent consequences. When a person analyses this information, they can make the right decision. They were very enthusiastic for finding ways to motivate others. Their colleagues began to actively participate in the process, which in turn drove turnover in their restaurants. This company had four restaurants and opened another one.
For us, every person has the potential for success, and the work of the coach is to help them find their inner leader and learn to follow them.
